My Diploma Work! It's finally finished! Kyaah! :faint:

Full view for the detail, please.

My mom is one of the few orginal Star Wars fans in Finland. Since the first time she saw the piece of jewelry, "Galactic peaks (made by Finnish desinger, Björn Weckström [link] ", on Princess Leia's neck she have wanted a same kind piece of jewelry for herself, simple and futuristic necklace.

And then, when my mom was 19, she tryed to learn to fly. With a motorbike. I'm glad she only broke her collarbone, but doctors had to operate it, and because of my mom's skin type she still has a nasty scar on the skin over her collarbone. That have made her to want to have a big neclase even more, to cover up the scarr.

Now she have begged for three years since I started the school that I should make her the big neclace to cover her scar. I haven't had any time nor skills to make big piece of jewelry like that, untill now.

So, this is my diploma work, the "final exam" for this school. The theme for the works was this year finnish word "Liitto" wich can be translated as "combination" or "union". I thought that a big neclace would make a good diploma work, and I could make my mom really happy. But I didn't just to want make a copy of Leia's neclace, because I'm not Björn Weckström, and unlike my mom, who's in to sci-fi, futurism and simplistic desing, I'm interested in Middle ages, old fairytales, ancient finnish, viking and celtic jewelry. It also facinates me that even in this time of factory robots, cars with computers and capability to communicate with almost anybody at any time, people seem to love even more and more beautiness. In older sci-fi books and movies common theme is this fear of humans turning to machiness, but now it seem that people are more afraid of machiness, robots, turning in to humans. I wanted to combine all these things together, So after few scheches I came up with this idea of making half of neclase from square-shaped pieces of silver, and cast the other half in to this organic-shaped form.

The name of the for this necklace is from Ayreon's song "Out of the White Hole"

"There seems to be no motion, no pleasure and no pain
No symptoms of emotion, no loss and no gain

Solar screens and cold machines are covering up the ground
Crystal covered fields of green and oceans underground

Countless different entities but they all look the same
But then one of the entities is crying out its name:"

So, the neclace is now a Union of mother and dougther, and combination of old and futuristic, organic and mechanic and decorative and functional desing.

Materials: Sterling silver, Crysocolla, 9 cubic zirconias.

Wow! What a great piece of jewellery I love the simplicity of the design The combination of organic and graduated structured geometric shapes works really well. Very nice to see the use of different techniques and such a lovely clasp.
Looking forward to seeing more. Your Mum must be thrilled to have this one.

Gorgeous. I'm glad it's not a re-creation of Leia's necklace, it just makes it all the more original :)

I think my mom also likes more from a orginal creation than having just a copy of Weckström's necklace. :)

Very nice design, I think it works well as a complete piece. My only critique would be to spend a little more time finishing the surfaces, and perhaps adding some texture to make it feel less flat. The organic side could also do with an articulation or two, so that it lays better on the neck. Beautiful work, I have no doubt that you got an excellent grade for this.

Thanks for the comment :)

Actually, the organic side lays suprisingly well on my mom's neck, considering that I have made after my own neck. With articulations I could have made it more fitting for different kinds of necks, but since it's ment only for my mom, I don't think articulations are needed.

About the surfases, I really would've liked to to make so much more details for the necklace, make the square pieces less flat and all the other thing, but I just simply run out of time. I had 7 weeks to make the piece of jewelry and 20-page-long essay about it (Believe it or not, I have mild dyslexia and I don't like to write long essays). I'm also going to aply to Institute of Desing [link] and the dead line for the pre-exams was on the same week as for the diploma work. Some how I made it, even though those were the most stressful weeks of my life.

Thanks again for the constructive comment, they are always welcome :aww:

Well it really is beautiful, and I wish you luck with all your endeavors. I have three types of dyslexia, so I know the feeling with papers and such :)
